Description
Companies and businesses use logos and letterhead for their stationary. The type of lettering and design of the letterhead can tell something about the company and give them a style. A letterhead for a large stockbrokerage would be different than a letterhead for a small pet shop. After sharing this information in a handout form, students will be given the task to develop their own business card, stationary, and envelope using the computer. They should develop their own design to use in developing these items. The final product will reflect their understanding of graphic art in as much as the use of color, line, shape, space, texture, and value to develop a final computer generated piece reflecting a product/business based on their own identity.

Plan
  1. Share handouts, read/discuss terms. Show examples.
  2. Using pencil and paper sketch 3-4 ideas. Pick the idea which most creatively reflects interest/identity of student; such as nature lover: gardening service; pet lover: pet storeowner; biker: bike repair shop; wants to be a doctor: clinic; likes to bake: bakery; etc.
  3. Once a design has been established, students will go to the computer and create a letterhead, envelope, and business card. They may scan art which they have drawn (or use clip art which is altered in some way). (Must be familiar with Claris works, Adobe Photoshop, or Microsoft Home Publishing, whatever is available on the school computers).
  4. Upon completion, students will print out and matt their final products.
  5. Students must fill out analysis sheet and questions, to be turned in with matted work. Work will be analyzed based upon elements of design: line, shapes: logo, color: eye catching; principles of design: contrast and repetition of design; creativity; correct information; font reflects company style; craftsmanship: letters are clear and neatness. Questions to answer: Is your letterhead, card, and envelope informative with the necessary information? Is your design attractive? And How? What makes your design stand out? What did you add to your design to make it different from others? How would you rate your craftsmanship? Excessent, Good, Average, Poor? Explain. How would you rate your design? Excellent, Good, Average, Poor? Explain. How would you rate your design? Excellent, Good, Average, Poor? Explain. Did you design a logo that is named after you or your family? And does it reflect a personal interest?
