Growth in Hemispheric Dominance and Lateralization

Birth to Age 9

The verbal left hemisphere is not born in charge of conscious mental operations- this develops slowly.

In the young child the brain has equal representations for language and perception in both the right and the left hemispheres. The unusual, fresh, and "creative" responses of young children can probably be attributed to equal access to these two different forms of thinking.
