Growth in Hemispheric Dominance and Lateralization

Age 9 to Adolescence

Slowly, in the developmental years, the left hemisphere begins to take over and dominate mental life for language and logical decision making.

As the left hemisphere becomes dominant as a decision processing system, it gives order and stability to mental operations. The alternative would be to have each hemisphere making separate and possible conflicting decisions.

The price of this gradually greater inhibition of the right hemispheric functions is suppression of the visual thinking skills upon which art depends.
