Principle for Emphasizing Right Hemispheric Mode Thinking
"In order to gain access to the subdominant visual, perceptual R-mode of the brain, it is necessary to present the brain with a job that the verbal, analytic L-mode will turn down."
Betty Edwards*
Art educator Dr. Betty Edwards is a pioneer in qualitatively researching some of the implications of utilizing the two distinct thinking modes of the brain hemispheres in art instructional techniques. In her two books, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and "Drawing on the Artist Within", she has demonstrated observable growth in realistic drawing skills through techniques designed specifically to activate a greater balance of right hemispheric-like (R-mode) visual spatial thinking. Above is her stated basic principle for designing effective R-mode activities.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT IN THIS SECTION: As you read through the materials on brain based visual education in this section, speculate on the types of innovative strategies (jobs or creative problems) that could be assigned to students to give them greater access to visual thinking modes in the brain that they can integrate with the L-mode processes.
