Principle #3:

Visual arts instruction must be founded on teaching a balance of right and left hemispheric mode processes.

Mental Processes are a Continuum.

The brain operates as a whole integrated unit.

Continuum: A continuous whole, quantity, or series; thing whose parts cannot be separated or separately discerned.

No artificial boundary line between the left and right hemisphere.

Continuous: Going on or extending without interruption or break; unbroken; connected.

Both modes of thinking are involved in all mental activities.

Continual: Happening over and over again; repeated; often; going on uninterruptedly; continuous.

The Unique balance of modes in each person creates individuality.

Continuity: The state or quality of being continuous, connectedness; coherence; a continuous flow; unbroken; coherent whole.

Teaching Greater Reliance on Right Mode Processes

Because our culture so favors and promotes heavily left hemispheric mode processes (reading, writing, and mathematics) in its educational system, the visual arts educator must innovate and design instructional strategies that promote greater use of the right hemispheric mode. A great deal of mental activity in the right hemispheric mode is consistent with the practices of artists. Teachers need to help balance students' mental continuums (with a foundation in right hemispheric mode processes).
