Old Art Basics: Why the content is NOT basic.

I. Element and Principles of Art and Design

The formal aspects of visual design, which are well established in basic art textbooks, are but vocabulary: specific arrangements of alphabetic symbols. NAB regards these words as important for verbal discussion about art but not basic to the generation of performance based knowledge about visual imagery. Outside the narrow realm of art education there is little basic about these words for other educational disciplines, such as science, mathematics, social studies, or language arts. While helpful in describing and analyzing visual forms, words describing formal qualities are unlikely to be regarded by a basic to a general education.
