Old Art Basics: Why the content is NOT basic.

II. Art Materials and Media Handling Techniques

A stick of graphite surrounded with wood, a pencil, is, in terms of the contemporary world, very second or third rate technology. First order technology, the type available in the world of science, is beyond the scope of the K-12 art budget. While the sensitive manipulation of art materials is central to expressive art production, the technologies utilized in the art classroom are not provably basic to life experiences, outside the world of studio art. The New Art Basics project regards materials as foundational to art production but not a basic aspects of the discipline of art for purposes of general educational development. It is rather the internal mental technologies of visual and creative thinking, developed while working with art materials, that make art a basic discipline for preparing students for life.
