New Art Basics: Teacher / Student Relationship

The NAB philosophy holds that both teacher and student are inherently full of the natural ability to think and communicate visually. In many ways, in fact, the young child is uniquely and fluently in touch with the brain process utilized by artists for expressive visual communication.

"Adults should not teach children to draw. They should learn from them." Pablo Picasso

In a New Art Basics classroom the teacher encourages and draws out the natural visual learning abilities of the student through well designed strategies, based on sound brain based knowledge of visual thinking and global perspectives on the human, cultural, and historical contexts of artistic thought. The NAB teacher/researcher is also regarded as a life long learner and as Pablo Picasso suggests, may learn as much as they teach while guiding the unfolding of their students' natural abilities.
